True Grit: Unraveling the Mysteries of Sandblasting    by Butch Young and Rita Long

For more than fifteen years Butch Young has taught sandblasting, from the most basic beginners to advanced technicians. She has encountered a lot of people who are interested in sandblasting in various capacities, but are either intimidated or confused how to go about improving. Many people come to the discipline of sandblasting from some other profession, such as glazing, stained glass, engraving, or car detailing, to name a few. Some are hobbyists, while others are seeking a career in production, and others still want to break into the customized architectural glass market. Much of the information that’s available is often over-general, or too specialized.

It has been Butch’s experience that most people in blasting today are rather isolated, and glean information from competing sources. Consequently, a lot of people are either over- or under-invested in their equipment, with no real idea of what the proper set-up might actually look like for their purposes. She felt that there was a need for a manual which acts as a sort of unifying theory of sandblasting equipment and techniques for individuals in all sorts of situations. To that end, along with her co-author, Rita Long, she is proud to announce a new manual, True Grit: Unraveling The Mysteries Of Sandblasting, written for those who have not yet entered the world of blasting, but are looking where to start; those who have dabbled some, and now want to get serious; and those who are serious, but just can’t seem to get either their equipment or technique up to speed.

Therefore, the main emphasis for the opening chapters of the manual is a thorough discussion of the projected needs for a sandblasting business, and a step-by-step analysis of the equipment that will best suit a new blaster’s current goals, and still be expandable for the future. Then, True Grit systematically addresses the initial installation, hook-up, and maintenance of the equipment, as well as troubleshooting. All of the supplies needed to operate a business, as well as the many materials to sandblast are covered.

Finally, no how-to manual would be complete without a discussion of techniques, covering the basic functions thoroughly, and some hints of the advanced effects that are possible. For most people, once they have mastered the basic sandblasting skills, then pattern generation becomes their biggest concern, and True Grit expounds on that. Chapters on generating a customer base, pricing, production work, specialized blasting equipment, and an extensive checklist of materials, equipment, and services required to get started in business round out the information a beginning professional blaster will find vital.

Butch sincerely hopes that True Grit will serve as both an inspirational starting point for the new blaster, and as an on-going reference for the more established blaster, for years to come.
