NOTE ON ALL CLASSES:
|
| |
I like to teach in an atmosphere of casual hilarity. You WILL have fun. You WILL wear weird hats and eat weird food; but ABOVE ALL--you WILL learn...and learn, and learn. I hold all scheduled classes, regardless of number of students. If you are the only student; then, LUCKY YOU.
\You get a private class. I take your scheduling and travel plans seriously, and recognize the inconvenience engendered by class cancellations. So, no excuses. You're stuck. Please check out the website to see how previous victims fared. Also, peruse the various galleries for student work and marvel at all of my students who have won the monthly Glastar contests. (there is a link) If you are unable to get online, please call me days at (805) 462-2791 or cel: (805) 286-7575
If you know me, you know not to call during Dallas Cowboys' football games, Jeopardy, Deadwood, House, or Grey's Anatomy.

STENCIL INTERPRETATION
|
| |
with Master Glass Sandblaster Butch Young
OR THE BUTCH EATS CROW class
 |
This is an exciting new offering from the die-hard non-stelcil person. I have finally come the conclusion that few students like to cut, nor are they very good at it. My previous aversion to stencils was based on the fact that they were basically babyish and an insult to one's intelligence; not to mention that every person on the block has the same image. In this class you will dabble in creating computer-generated pre-cut stencils from a library of custom images. You will then learn to interpret the same stencil in many different ways, through creative, supplimental cutting and blasting. This class is five days and will be limited to four students. The cost is $1250.00 and all tools and materials will be supplied. No computer or blasting experience necessary. For more information on this seminar, please call Butch Young at (805) 462-2791 during business hours, or e-mail us at THESANDWITCH@prodigy.net. No experience necessary for this class. It requires a five day commitment and $1,250.00. If you want to work with larger pieces of glass, this is the future for you.

KEEPING YOUR TEMPER:
|
| |
by Master Glass Sandblaster Butch Young
Dispelling the myths of tempered glass
 |
If you're considering a career in residential and commercial decorative glass work, you must realize that 85-90 per cent of your work will be on tempered glass. Now, before you get the vapors; do not despair. I have been working with tempered glass for close to fifteen years now, and have never suffered a blasting accident. I work on it all; from 1/8" to 1/2" with fearless abandon. It simply requires some basic knowledge, and a little care in handling.
This class is five days and begins with the blasting of two pieces of 1/8" tempered glass which will then be made into an insulated glass unit for you to be able to take home as a sample piece. (Insulated windows and doors are mammoth sellers.) The class will work on all reasonable thicknesses of tempered glass as well as a community shower door that will remain in my gallery, appropriately attributed to the individuals in the class. For my money, high-end residential and commercial blasting is the most immediately lucrative facet of the medium. Quite frequently, the formula is this simple: One shower door plus one to two days work equals $900.00-$1,500.00. Not bad for never leaving the shop. All aspects of creating business using the services, employees, and product of existing glass shops in your area will also be revealed. It really works. Expect your income to increase after this thoroughly absorbing, challenging, and illuminating experience.
No experience necessary for this class. It requires a five day commitment and $1,250.00. If you want to work with larger pieces of glass, this is the future for you.

The FIRST THIRD Annual BLAFUSLUM Fest:
|
| |
by Master Glass Sandblaster Butch Young and phusing phenom Jodie Paulk, aka Swoop Doggy Dog.
A Combination Sandblasting/Fusing/Slumping Seminar.
 |
Yes, you read that right. Our First Annual Blafuslum Fests, taught by left-handed Lithuanians, were so popular, we could hardly hold back the ravaging hordes. A combination of blasting, fusing, and slumping with incredibly unique, unpredictable, and highly saleable finished products. Trust me on this. You will be amazed by the creativity unleashed in you. This is more fun than creamed corn and jello hog wrestling; and somehow, it seems totally incongruous that such beauty results.
Great ethnic food provided. Lithuanian fish tacos, New Mexican Polish Sausage burritos are our specialties. YUM.
Five days, strictly limited to a maximum of four, and costs $1,250.00. No experience necessary. Hurry.
Butch Young, aka The Sandwitch has been a glass artist and an instructor in sandblasting skills for more than seventeen years. She has taught large and small seminars, given private instruction, and has taught on the Internet. She has produced several video classes, authored the beginning sandblasting manual, True Grit: Unraveling the Mysteries of Sandblasting, writes regular columns for two international magazines, and has been featured in a host of other publications. Her work appears in businesses and homes across the country, and in galleries throughout the world. She is committed to creating classes that expand on the possibilities and profitability of sandblasted glass.
Jodie Paulk has been a multi-faceted glass artist for 18 years and enhanced and perfected her fusing and slumping techniques in the First Annual Blafuslum Fest. Her initial class projects sold immediately and she now has such devoted collectors that she has begun producing limited editions. Her work is ingenious and beautiful as well as ambitious. And she will challenge and expand your senses and abilities. Jodie is one of twelve women who run a popular gallery, Las Comadres, in Taos, New Mexico, where she is consistently a top seller.

Combo Class: Supersized with Gold Leafing
|
| |
Our most popular event combines the techniques of creative surface etching and pattern creation with spectacular results. This is a very intense and illuminating seminar, so don't sign up if you don't want to work your you know what off. A recent addition to this class (by popular demand) is the free-form mirror. A shape cut from a larger shape totally by sandblasting; then layers are added front and back. And, if you know me at all, you'll know that more is better, so a carving or logo is added and gilded. A dazzling finished product as well as a huge seller. Since pattern creation must have room to breathe and grow, we will be working on some glass as large as 20 by 42.
No experience necessary. As always, class will be limited to a maximum of four students. All materials included.
It will be five days long and cost $1,250.00.
